This
collection of fully restored, 1930s animated shorts from the
legendary Max Fleischer are a real treat. For anyone who has grown
up associating the Superman character with different phases of art
direction in Superman comic books over the last 50 years, or
best remembers the look of the Christopher Reeve films or the old
television show, these 'toons will be a mini-revelation. Expanding
on cues from the first generation of Superman comics,
Fleischer immerses the man from Krypton in a marvelous blend of art
deco, William Cameron Menzies-inspired sets, and edgy compositions
that can't help but remind one of Fritz Lang-ian paranoia. Now
restored to their best possible quality, these 17 animation
masterpieces are presented in superbly clear quality! right from the
35mm negative.

A
DAY AT THE RACES A Day at the Races is the Marx
Brothers at their commercial and popular peak, working with a top
Hollywood director (Sam Wood of The Pride of the Yankees),
supported with a healthy screen budget paying for such extras as a
blue-tinted ballet sequence, love songs from crooner Allan Jones, and
decorative sets. But the brothers are also at the top of their game in
terms of their own comic material and timing. The story finds Groucho,
Chico, and Harpo helping out at a sanatorium, where their longtime foil
in the movies, Margaret Dumont, is the leading patient.

Night in Casablanca may not qualify as a Marx Brothers classic, but
it's certainly the best of their latter-day comedies. "This picture is

ON THE TOWN
Co-directors Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen (SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN) also choreographed this musical classic following three sailors docked in New York City for twenty-four hours. New to town and ready to see the sights--and the girls--Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin search for adventure in the Big Apple. Wooing the ladies with their singing and dancing and being charmed in return, the trio finds various degrees of romantic success. But as all good things must come to an end, the navy men return to their ship, leaving behind them a city briefly brighter and taking with them a heartful of memories. Dancing by the marvelous and masculine Kelly and singing by heartthrob Sinatra (looking the musical numbers, including the famous "New York, New York" scene. ON THE TOWN was one of the first movies filmed on location in New York--a wild extravagance in those days--and the extra effort taken shows in every shot of the film.

VIVA LAS
VEGAS
Elvis Presley is Lucky Jackson, an aspiring auto racer with a dream of winning the Grand Prix. Sexy, spunky Ann-Margret is Rusty Martin, the swimming instructor who falls for him against her will, hating the idea of her man risking his life in a race car. Lucky struggles to raise the money to buy a new engine while Rusty tries to convince him to give up racing for her.
George Sidney, a seasoned veteran of the lavish Hollywood musical, proves the perfect helmsman for this high-voltage Elvis vehicle. VICTOR VICTORIA
Blake Edwards's delightful Victor/Victoria
may be one of the last of the great, old-style movie musical
comedies--it is so good, it was turned into a hit Broadway stage musical
years later. And both versions starred Edwards's wife Julie Andrews (the
former Mary Poppins) in the title role--as Victor and Victoria. She's a
down-and-out singer who hooks up with a flamboyantly gay theatrical
veteran (Robert Preston), and together they become the toast of 1934
Paris by dreaming up a provocative nightclub act in which Victoria
assumes the identity of a man in drag. So, in other words, Andrews plays
a woman playing a man playing a woman

NORTH BY NORTHWEST
is a suspense thriller that finds Cary Grant in the role of Roger
Thornhill, a Manhattan advertising executive mistaken for a spy. Considered by many to be the prototypical pure action movie (creating the template for later James Bond and Indiana Jones films), the film is a cross-country roller-coaster ride with Alfred Hitchcock at the helm. One
of Hitchcock's best.

DIAL M FOR
MURDER Alfred Hitchcock had already begun work on REAR WINDOW when he took on the project to direct DIAL M FOR MURDER, based on the successful play by Frederick Knott. For the film, Hitchcock chose to cast his favorite leading lady of the time, Grace Kelly, as the embattled Margot Wendice. Kelly would also star in REAR WINDOW and Hitchcock's subsequent TO CATCH A THIEF. It wasn't Hitchcock's preference to shoot DIAL M FOR MURDER in Warnercolor 3D (the cameras were large and unwieldly), and the film is seldom screened in 3D, but Hitchcock's use of the technique is notable for its service to the story rather than just being a gimmick.
